This Privacy Policy explains how Matthew DiPaola ("we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you use the SafeCycle mobile application (the "App"). By using the App, you agree to the practices described here.
1. Who We Are
SafeCycle is operated by Matthew DiPaola. If you have questions about this policy or your information, contact us at privacy@getsafecycle.app.
2. Age Requirement
SafeCycle is intended for people aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are under 13, please do not use the App or provide any information. If we learn that we have collected information from a child under 13, we will delete it. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us information, contact us at privacy@getsafecycle.app.
If you are between 13 and 18, you should review this policy with a parent or guardian before using the App.
3. Information We Collect
Information you provide
Account information: your email address, a username you choose, and a password (stored securely by our authentication provider — we never see your raw password).
Content you contribute: bike-parking spots you add (including their location, type, and your safety notes), reviews and star ratings you write, and photos you upload.
Profile information: an optional profile photo and any display information tied to your username.
Information collected automatically
Location information: with your permission, the App uses your device's location to center the map near you, calculate distances to nearby parking spots, and let you place a spot at your current position. When you add a spot, its coordinates (and derived region, such as city, state/province, country, and continent) are stored as part of that spot. You can deny or revoke location permission in your device settings; some features will be limited without it.
Usage and device information: basic technical information necessary to operate the App reliably.
Information from others
Other users' interactions with your content — for example, reviews left on spots you created, or "helpful" votes on your reviews — are associated with your account so we can show you notifications and badge progress.
4. How We Use Information
To provide core features: showing bike-parking spots on a map, searching destinations, displaying reviews and safety ratings, and enabling contributions.
To create and manage your account and username.
To display community content, including your username and contributions, to other users.
To send in-app notifications (for example, when someone reviews your spot, marks your review helpful, when you earn a badge, or when a moderator acts on your content).
To award badges based on your activity.
To operate moderation and safety features, including an automated word filter and moderator review, to keep community content appropriate.
To maintain the security, integrity, and reliability of the App.
5. What Is Visible to Other Users
SafeCycle is a community app, so some information is public to other users by design:
Your username and optional profile photo.
The bike-parking spots you add, including their location and details.
The reviews, ratings, lighting/visibility assessments, and photos you post.
Your public profile, showing your badges and contribution statistics.
Please do not include sensitive personal information in spot names, notes, reviews, or photos. Remember that locations you post are visible to others; avoid revealing private or personally identifying places.
6. How We Share Information
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only as follows:
With other users: the public content described in Section 5.
With service providers: we use third-party infrastructure to run the App, including Supabase (authentication, database, and photo storage) and OpenStreetMap/Nominatim (for destination search and reverse geocoding). These providers process data on our behalf to make the App work.
For legal reasons: if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of our users or others.
7. Data Storage and Security
Your information is stored using Supabase, which provides secure, access-controlled database and storage services. We use industry-standard measures such as encrypted connections and row-level security rules to protect your data. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.
8. Your Choices and Rights
Access and update: you can view and edit your profile, username, and contributions in the App.
Delete content: you can delete spots and reviews you created.
Delete your account: you can permanently delete your account and associated personal data directly in the App, in the Settings screen. You may also request deletion by contacting privacy@getsafecycle.app. When you delete your account, your personal information (such as your email and profile details) is removed, and the bike-parking spots and reviews you contributed are retained in anonymized form (shown as from a deleted user) so that community safety information is preserved. Some information may be retained where required for legitimate operational or legal reasons.
Report content: you can report inappropriate spots or reviews within the App so our moderators can review and, if appropriate, remove them.
Location permission: you can grant or revoke location access at any time in your device settings.
Notifications: you can manage notification preferences in your device or App settings.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights (such as under the GDPR or CCPA) to access, correct, delete, or restrict the use of your personal information. To exercise these, contact us at privacy@getsafecycle.app.
9. Data Retention
We keep your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the App. If you delete your account, we remove your personal information and anonymize the spots and reviews you contributed (so they remain useful to the community without being tied to your identity), except where retention is required for legal, security, or legitimate operational purposes.
10. Third-Party Services
The App relies on third-party services that have their own privacy practices, including Supabase and OpenStreetMap/Nominatim. We encourage you to review their policies. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of third parties.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the App. Your continued use of the App after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
12. Contact Us
If you have questions or requests regarding this Privacy Policy or your information, contact us at privacy@getsafecycle.app.
